Ever since the launch of the Blackmagic 4K Pocket Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Design has been redefining just what it means to be a cinema camera. Designed with a form factor similar to DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, but with the quality and featureset of pro cinema cameras, Blackmagic’s Pocket Cinema line has literally changed the world of cinema cameras forever.
Launched just a few years after the 4K Pocket Cinema Camera, the first generation 6K model was a modest upgrade, most notable for its change from micro-four-thirds to Canon EF mount, as well as the obvious increase in video resolution from 4K to 6K. Soon thereafter came the 6K Pro, which add built-in ND filters, an adjustable tiltable display, a second XLR audio port, and much-improved battery life.
But now that Blackmagic has decided it’s time to refresh the base 6K model with an improved second-generation model, the question everyone’s asking is “Should I get the base 6K, the 6K Pro, or the 6K Pro G2?” We’re here to help you make that decision with a roundup of Blackmagic 6K G2 reviews from around the web, highlighting the pros and cons of the new second-generation BMPCC 6K G2.
What Stayed the Same?
If you’re already familiar with the original BMPCC 6K, you may already know all the basic specs that carry over to the G2. But just in case you need a refresher, here’s a recap:
- Sensor: 23.10mm x 12.99mm Super 35
- Lens Mount: Canon EF
- Dynamic Range: 13 Stops
- Focus: Single-shot auto-focus with compatible lenses
- Native Resolution: 6144 x 3456
- ISO: Dual Native ISO up to 3200 (Max ISO of 25600)
- Frame rate: Up to 60FPS Full Resolution / 120 FPS Windowed
- Storage: 1 x CFast card slot, 1 x SD UHS‑II card slot, 1 x USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 expansion port for external media for Blackmagic RAW and ProRes Recording
The original Pocket Cinema 6K was a solid performer, and with this second generation there are no noticeable steps backward. So if the BMPCC 6K was already on your list, the G2 will do everything you need and then some.
How is the BMPCC 6K G2 Different from the First Generation 6K?
The biggest change between the 6K G2 and the first generation BMPCC6K is the new 5″ tilting touchscreen display – which in our experience is a pretty big deal, especially when shooting cinema-style footage. Since shooting cinema-style often includes more drastic camera angles than straight-up video (low-angle shots, we’re looking at you), the tilting display really helps you keep an eye on your shot without either having to crouch or resort to an external viewfinder.
The other big change is the addition of a second mini XLR port, which is something we personally have been wishing for as it allows for multiple camera placements (or stereo recording) without having to limit yourself to only using a 3.5mm mic if you want more than one audio source.
What’s New:
- 5″ Tilting Touchscreen Display
- Second mini XLR port
- Built-in gyro for stabilization (requires DaVinci Resolve)
- External EVF Mount
- Longer-life F570 Battery support
Lastly, in terms of price, the G2 is priced exactly the same as the 1st gen – or about $500 less than the 6K Pro. So, if you’re in the market for a new 6K and don’t need the pro, be sure to look for the G2. Of course, you could also probably find 6K G1 models at discount prices as inventory is cleared out, as well as used for a decent price as people upgrade.
The 6K G2’s array of ports shows just how serious it is, including two mini-XLR ports, full size HDMI, USB 3.1 for external SSDs and a 12V power supply port.
“The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 is extraordinary value for money. There are plenty of mirrorless cameras that cost more than this and do a lot less from a filmmaker’s point of view. “
– Digital Camera World
“You can record video for longer while improving the composition of your shots, to put it simply.”

What’s Different with the BMPCC 6K Pro?
Two of the biggest differences still in place between the 6K G2 and the 6K Pro are that the BMPCC 6K Pro has built-in ND filters and a brighter display – both of which can be quite meaningful to those who do a lot of shooting outdoors. Of course, you can always add ND filters to your lenses or get a brighter external monitor if these are issues for you – but they’ll add additional cost and bulk to your kit.
“The updates to the 6K G2 are pretty modest. At the core of the camera is the same 6,144×4,456 Super35 sensor and EF lens mount found on the original Cinema Camera 6K and the 6K Pro, but doesn’t bring the motorized ND filters found on the latter.”

Is the BMPCC 6K G2 worth it?
As you can see, the 6K continues to be a fairly substantial powerhouse of a cinema camera – especially if you’re not ready to spend considerably more for an Ursa or Canon C-Series. If you’re in the market for a new 6K and don’t need the pro, get the G2.
The only reasons we’d recommend spending the extra $500 for the Pro is 1.) your budget can afford an extra $500, and 2.) you’ll be doing a lot of shooting outdoors.
